8 Simple Home Remedies for Toothache
A toothache is pain that you feel in or around your tooth. Most often, toothache pain is a sign that there’s something wrong with your tooth or gums.
Toothaches can be caused by various reasons such as tooth decay, gum irritation from food, a broken tooth, repetitive motions such as chewing, removal of a tooth, or an abscessed tooth. Although these are all possibilities, the most common reason people experience toothaches is because there’s an irritation of the nerve in the root of the tooth.
A bad toothache can cause you a lot of pain and bother you while sleeping or eating. It can pretty much affect all your daily activities and give rise to multiple other issues like headache, fever, swollen gums etc.

1. IceApplying ice to the area of the painful tooth can help to numb the pain. You can try different versions of this technique. Wrap some ice in a towel and apply it to the affected area. Keep the compress in place for 15 minutes at a time. Also, you could try holding ice water in your mouth for several seconds at a time.
Don’t bite the ice, however, as it could break your teeth.
2. Saltwater Rinse
Saltwater is a natural disinfectant. It can help loosen up food particles and debris that may be stuck in between your teeth. Doing a saltwater rinse can also help reduce inflammation and heal any oral wounds.
Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and use it as a mouthwash.
3. Clove OilClove oil works to relieve pain and reduce the swelling that stems from the toothache. Clove oil is effective because it contains eugenol, a natural anesthetic. It acts as a temporary pain reliever.
Soak up a few drops of clove oil in a cotton ball, then gently rub the cotton ball over the affected teeth and gums. You can also put a drop or two of clove oil in water and use it as a mouthwash.
Clove oil may soothe your pain, but be aware that it doesn't have the most pleasant taste.
4. Hydrogen Peroxide RinseA rinse with hydrogen peroxide diluted with water can also relieve pain and inflammation. It also kills bacteria, reduces plaque and heals bleeding gums.
Do not forget to dilute the hydrogen peroxide. Add 3 per cent hydrogen peroxide with equal parts of water and use it as a mouthwash. Remember, do not swallow it.
5. Tea BagsYou can apply either a cold or warm tea bag to your tooth. If applying a used tea bag, make sure that it has cooled down so that it is not hot but is still warm. If you prefer the cold option, try placing a used tea bag in the freezer for a few minutes, then apply it to your tooth.
Peppermint tea may be especially good for toothaches due to its bacteria-fighting properties.
6. GarlicGarlic has been used as a home remedy for thousands of years for various problems. Garlic can kill the harmful bacteria that causes dental plaque and also acts as a pain reliever at the same time.
Crush a garlic clove and make a paste. Apply it to the affected area. You can also add some salt to the garlic paste or chew on some garlic.
7. Vanilla ExtractAnother natural anti-inflammatory, vanilla, can also help to numb the pain caused by a toothache.
Try putting a small amount on your finger or a cotton swab and applying it to the affected area a few times a day.
8. Guava Leaves
Guava leaves have anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties that can help to soothe your aching tooth. You can use the leaves to make a tea that you allow to cool and use as a rinse or simply chew on the leaves to get some relief.
