Mudra therapy or vigyaan (the science of healing through various gestures) is an effective therapy propounded by ancient sages.

The Sanskrit word Mudra means "to seal , to close, to lockup or gesture, symbol, expression of or attitude". The Kularnava Tantra traces the word Mudra to the root mud, meaning 'delight' or 'pleasure' and dravay, the causal form of dru, which means 'to draw forth'.

Mudra are a combination of subtle physical movements which alter mood, attitude, perception and which deepen awareness and concentration. Mudra expresses and channelizes cosmic energy within the mind and body.

The human body is made up of Panchamahabhootas or The 5 great elements:
  1. Ether (Space/Akash).
  2. Wind (Air/Vayu).
  3. Fire (Agni/Tej).
  4. Water (Jal/Aap).
  5. Earth (Prithvi/Bhoomi).
We believe that our five fingers correspond to five natural elements i.e. thumb embodies 'fire' or agni, the index finger embodies 'air' or vayu, the middle finger 'sky' or akash, the ring finger embodies 'earth' or prithvi and the little finger signifies 'water' or jal.

The imbalance in these 5 great elements leads to various physical and psychological ailments. So the practice of Mudra adjust the flow of energy which balance the 5 great elements and facilitate healing process with the restoration of health.
